In 1995 the National Academy of Sciences released On Being a Scientist and emphasized a core belief that “science is not an individual experience” but that it is “shared knowledge”. It is this basic principle that motivates me as a teacher but is also one that I have come to realize aligns well with the Jesuit traditions and Ignatian pedagogy that Gonzaga was founded upon. I believe my purpose in the classroom is to provide the framework for students to move beyond their rote knowledge and experiences in the classroom so that they can eventually formulate their own ideas, opinions, or ask their own questions.
