Personal
I have been privileged to be a faculty member and
administrator at Gonzaga University in the Department of Counselor Education
since January 1978.
My roles during this time have included Adjunct faculty member, Assistant
professor, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department. I hold memberships
in the Washington Counseling Association (WCA), Washington State Association
for Counselor Educators and Supervisors (WSACES), Association for Counselor
Education and Supervision (ACES), American Counseling Association (ACA), and
the American Psychological Association (APA).
During my tenure as a member of our Department, I have been fortunate to mentor
hundreds of graduate students. Many of these students have become vital leaders
in our field and outstanding counselors. One of my favorite roles has been
mentoring students who have gone on to earn doctorates in our field. I take
seriously my role in the placement process as students finish our training
program, and make serious efforts to help them get established in the field.
My research interest have included the public perception of the role and
function of professional counselors, malpractice insurance issues, and the
professional counselor training and financial indebtedness for students
completing graduate counseling programs. Recently, I have been very interested
in writing about our departmental counseling matrix model. This model has a
deep focus on the counseling process and its application. This has been a major
partnership between myself and Dr. Lisa Bennett.
I have been fortunate to have had a very active consulting practice as a
professional counselor. My specialty has been in the diagnosis, training and
treatment of marital couples. My major couples modality has been heavily
influenced by John Gottman and the Gottman Institute. Our department faculty
has been very fortunate to participate in several training workshops under the
direction of Dr. Gottman and this has truly enhanced our students’ learning
experience.
Finally, I have been very blessed to work very closely with a faculty and staff that have created a strong team. This team has been committed to the Gonzaga University and Department of counselor Education mission statements. It is a real pleasure to serve our Department and our special graduate students with these fine colleagues.
