Study Guide -- Lab 1
1. Read pages 1-42 first. Read pages 5-12 carefully since important safety guidelines are given. Skim pages 13-17 and pages 18-21. The latter pages contain reference material that you will want to refer to throughout the semester as you work with various solvents. Read pages 22-29 where general guidelines for the notebook are given. Refer to the lab handout for the required notebook format. Read pages 30-36 to learn how to care for your glassware. Look at the pictures on pages 37-40 so you can identify your glassware.
2. Read pages 560-568 (Technique 2) to learn about the various heating and cooling methods then read pages 42-45 to prepare for lab exercise 1B.
3. Read pages 550-560 (Technique 1) to learn about the measurement of volume and weight and then read pages 45-53 to prepare for lab exercise 2C and 3.
4. Read pages 571-574 (Technique 3.2) to learn about heating under reflux and skim pages 634-640 (Techniques 6.11-6.14) to become familiar with boiling point determinations and thermometers. Finally, read pages 56-59 to prepare for lab exercise 5.
