Syllabus for Chem 230L This is being updated for summer 2003; check back frequently.
Pre-requisite: Chem 101L or 105L.
Special Note: If you withdraw from Chem 230L, you must also withdraw from Chem 230 (no exceptions).
Required Course Materials: (All items may be purchased at the bookstore).
1. Text: Pavia, Lampman, Kriz & Engel, Introduction to Organic Laboratory Techniques--A Microscale Approach; Third Edition, 1999. 2. Approved goggles (with side guards). 3. A bound laboratory notebook (no loose-leaf or spiral notebooks) with numbered pages. (The blue, bound notebook is recommended).
Operation of Laboratories: 1. Attendance: Laboratories begin promptly at the scheduled time. Morethantwo absences will result in a V (unofficial withdrawal) for the laboratory.
2. Quizzes: At the beginning of each laboratory period, a short quiz will be given covering material for the current laboratory as well as the previous experiment. Note that the study guides may be helpful in preparing for these quizzes.
3. Safety: You are responsible for working safely and understanding the hazards that are indicated by the instructors and in the safety section of your text. Learn thelocation of the exits, the eyewash, safety showers, fire extinguishers, and fire blankets. Also learn how to use them. Safety questions are likely to be asked on quizzes. Goggles are mandatory and must be worn whenever you are in the lab.
4. Reading: Assigned reading for each experiment is listed on the laboratory schedule and should be completed before the actual laboratory period. For some experiments, study guidelines will be provided prior to the experiment to help direct your reading. {For summer 1999 these were available on the website as study guides; I will try to update these for 2001}.
5. Laboratory Notebooks: Leave the first two pages of your laboratory notebook for a table of contents, and write you name both on the inside and outside of your notebook. Laboratory notebooks will be turned in to your teaching assistant for grading. Due dates are listed on the lab schedule.
6. Lab Write-ups: The following should be a part of each week's laboratory notebook:
You should write steps a-f (if appropriate) before arriving for the actual laboratory period.
a) Experiment title and date b) Purpose of the experiment c) Physical constants (molecular weights, bp, mp, and densities for reactants and products). d) Balanced chemical equations for reactions carried out. e) Calculations of theoretical yields (including calculation for limiting reagents) f) Proposed procedure: Outline of steps
You must complete step g during the laboratory period:
*g) Running account: A complete description of what went on during the course of the experiment. This must be written in the past tense, and should include actual amounts of reagents used, complete observations, and an explanation of what the purpose of each step was.
h) Data and results: Calculation of percent yield, summary of observed mp/bp, spectral data, etc.
i) Discussion of results: Include any problems encountered and an explanation for other than expected results.
*Running accounts must be initialed by the TA or instructor before you leave the laboratory. No credit will be given for work not properly endorsed.
7. Questions: Assigned questions for each experiment are listed on the laboratory schedule. The questions are due at the beginning of the next lab period and should be answered on separate sheets of paper (not in the laboratory notebook).
8. Grading: lab writeups/personal evaluation: 70% (including attitude, cleanliness, timeliness...)quizzes 15% questions 15%
Approximate grading scale: 90 - 100 % A/A- 80 - 90 B+/B/B- 70 - 80 C+/C/C- 60 - 70 D+/D < 60 F
